How to Store Nuts, Pecans & Dried Fruits: Storage Instructions

Once you have received your package, you must open it and look over the contents. The ingredients of all fruits, nuts, baked products, and candy items that aren't intended to be eaten immediately should be stored within the refrigerator or freezer. Dried fruit products, such as dates, raisins, or trail mix made from nuts and fruit, as well as grain-based items like rice flour, pasta, and flour products, are prone to insect infestation if they aren't kept at a temperature that is appropriate or stored for long durations of time. The risk of infestation increases dramatically when these products are stored in relatively humid, warm conditions common in various dry storage warehouses throughout the autumn.

Storing in Proper Temperature

It is a fact that heat can rapidly degrade the life span of any dried or roasted fruit. Roasted nuts have a short shell life when compared with other natural products. Roasting or being exposed to heat begins to release the natural oils contained in the nuts. It alters the chemical composition of the nut, making the heat more vulnerable to various other elements that can degrade the freshness of the nuts. The most effective solution is to keep your dried fruit and nuts in the refrigerator, and this will safeguard your item from heat, evidently, and you will have better shelf longevity. It is also advisable to purchase just enough for your requirements.

Water vapour and oxygen in the air

The dried and nut are prone to oxidation, and they can oxidize and absorb moisture from the atmosphere. It can happen when the nut or fruit reacts with natural gasses that are present in our surroundings. It causes the product to go wrong, and the flavour is diminished. Thus, it is always suggested to keep your dried fruits and nuts inside airtight containers, and this can limit exposure to air fresh until the time you're ready to snack.

Storage of Uncooked Dried Fruits

Place in the refrigerator and keep well-sealed to stop dried-out fruit. Zip-closed freezer bags are a good choice. Sometimes dried fruit, such as figs, may start becoming "sugar." These sugars that are naturally occurring can be eaten and give a pleasant crunch. If desired, it can be easily removed by washing the fruit in warm water.

Storage of Cakes, Chocolates & Candies

Candy and cakes remain reasonable in the freezer or refrigerator, provided they're sealed. You can either use airtight containers or a freezer bag. Fruit cakes can also be stored for later consumption, and one can keep it on the counter for 3-5 days and up to two weeks inside the fridge, and up to 3 months frozen. Always make sure that you keep the seal tightly closed.

Pecan Pie

If on the counter or in the refrigerator, wrap the pie in foil or plastic wrap. The pie will last for many days, and if stored in a well-sealed freezer, the pie will last for two months.

Storage of Toasted Nuts

Toasted nuts are safe when stored in the freezer, like raw nuts. It would be best to allow the nuts to be at ambient temperature before you open the container to take out the items you wish to use. Close the container, and then put it in the freezer. If exposed to air, the cold nuts absorb moisture and can turn limp.
